Tobacco Smuggling

20 Nov, 2015-16 Jan, 2016

Campoli Presti, London

Clément Rodzielski
Tobacco Smuggling
20 November – 16 January
Campoli Presti, London
Opening, 20th November from 6 to 8 pm

Campoli Presti is pleased to announce Clément Rodzielski’s second solo exhibition with the gallery opening on 20thNovember in London.

Clément Rodzielski’s work is marked by an attention to images, their modes of material and immaterial appearance as well as the uses and exchanges they depend on. With different gestures (printing, isolating, blowing up, cutting up, doubling up, spray painting) he explores the different possibilities of ready-mades as signifiers. His appropriations often involve overlooked or forgotten objects that no longer have a connection with their producer or owner.

Rodzielski’s exhibition draws upon counterfeit tobacco as a found material, reorganizing its circulation to build a fiction around the activity of painting. Carried underneath the large coats of its sellers on the streets of Parisian neighbourhood Barbès, fake tobacco negotiates its legal and economic status while being constantly exchanged. Trapped inside each of the works in the exhibition, the material of tobacco continues its constant flow of motion into painting, changing its use value entirely.

The display will feature a prolific set of drawings that are in direct relation to the paintings’ process of production. The paintings follow a pre-ordained palette of colours given by the different shades of tobacco itself, except for one colour that is arbitrarily chosen. Brushstrokes are dispersed throughout the wooden support, in the fashion of an interior pattern from a Nabis’ private setting, where painting is hidden or dissolved as part of a background decoration. The drawings, on the other hand, emerge as the paintings’ counterpart, dictating their own array of colours and revealing their layered process. Both mediums adopt a Trojan horse strategy; while at first look they seem to follow the conventions of abstraction, they hide painting’s potential function as a vehicle.

Clément Rodzielski (b. 1979) lives and works in Paris. His work forms part of the collections of CNAP; Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris; Fondation Kadist; FRAC Champagne-Ardenne; FRAC Île-de- France and FRAC Nord-Pas-de-Calais;. Recent solo exhibitions include Villa du Parc, Annemasse (2014); Synagogue de Delme, France (2014); Galerie Chantal Crousel, Paris (2014); MABA, Nogent-sur-Marne (2013); FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims (2012); Campoli Presti, London (2010); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2009); Bétonsalon, Paris (2005).

Bring home the oranges

Sutton Lane (Campoli Presti), London

Clément Rodzielski
Bring home the oranges
16 September – 9 October 2010
Sutton Lane, London

Sutton Lane is pleased to announce the first exhibition in London of French artist Clément Rodzielski. The artist presents a series of new works that investigate the modes of appearance and of circulation of objects.

The movie poster Elena et les hommes is a collector’s item in itself that has been folded in order to be circulated, passed from hand to hand and stored etc. Rodzielski traces the physical properties of the object by applying spray paint to the back of the poster while unfolding it. Once the poster is entirely unfurled and exhibited, light traces of paint are shining through.

The work Untitled (Portrait allemand), 2010 has as its source the original engraving for a set of German playcards from the 19th century. The artist resumes the fabrication of the card set which had never been completed, by colouring and cutting it.

Next to the set of cards is exhibited a large panel of standard format MDF featuring a fragment of wallpaper. The fragment is part of a wallpaper motif consisting of eight parts. The selected detail is taken from the background of the principal motif. In a manner similar to the cut magazine series, the artist has selected only peripheral fragments which are marginal to the subject matter.

The group of paintings 4 fonds colorés pour le faire-part de Molly, 2010 was originally created as a backdrop for a card that was commissioned to the artist to announce the birth of the child Molly. In this exhibition the works are being removed from their original context and purpose. They shift from one state to another, from background to foreground, from ‘decor’ back to painting.

Through his minimal interventions in the objects he recovers and rearranges, Rodzielski creates a doubling, a shift – the images lose their original sense becoming a different entity.

« When ill at ease in a group, I often take out of my coat pocket a folded paper, and study it intently, although I know it just says ‘bring home the oranges’ or some such thing. »
